The Last Blog: Class Highlights

Sunday, December 5, 2010
In JOUR 2 I've learned many things about the wide spectrum of media and its impact on how its shaped our world today. Now I understand the difference between Public Relations and Advertisement to a tee as well as other things. The vision for all things media in my life has been altered, I now can easily discriminate sources of information that once before I couldn't. I can now choose to censor what I see now, because I understand it. For example the concept of Green-Washing and Public Relations methods to make a company seem green is all a mirage. The messages from companies that are trying to sell something can be read more clearly now. Movies and recordings are more appreciated. In fact in this quarter alone I've bought two actual albums in store. Thats two more albums that I've ever bought. This class has helped me hone and define what my major is "mass communications" and has helped me understand the wide spectrum alot more.

This landmark ad uses many propaganda techniques such as
Beautiful people appeal, it depicts an attractive man, advertising the happiness and joy old spice body wash may bring if you purchase and use.
It also uses Quotes out of context. The focus is on whats going around however the random things he says makes you focus on the body wash itself, thus distracting you from what is really going on.

INTERNET
SAMIRtheSAV
I counted about 187, social networking sites listed. A majority of them I've heard of but predominantly Linkedin Twitter Facebook MySpace. Surprisingly there was nothing I didnt know that wasnt covered.
MOG is an online music network, where users can listen to, read about, and discover music.
I use social networking to stay close with friends, and to do just that, BE SOCIAL. My weapon of choice would have to be Facebook. When I was lost an assignment, I had no way of finding out what to do, luckily for me my teacher was online on facebook, I chatted with him and bang problem solved.

MOVIES or RECORDINGS

My favorite movie of 2009-2010 has to be hands down The Hangover. The movie itself was incredibly written, but what made it great was the acting. The comedic performances by Zach Galifinakis was amazing. Hands down a comedic masterpiece.
Hands down my favorite movie of all time is Gladiator the epic by ridley scott. This movie embodies everything that a movie should be, drama, action, romance, EVERYTHING. The story of a former war commander making his reappearance and exacting his revenge by being a lowly gladiator is the best movie ever.

SHIFT MAGAZINE
My magazine will be a semi annual print magazine that will emphasize to the lives of students transfering from one college to another ( CC to UC, UC to UC, CC to WHEREVER) with stories of experiences, tips, deadlines, college previews and more.·
The readers will be from all walks of life trying to make a change in there surroundings to help them better fit themselves in an environment to achieve. It would most likely be targeted towards the 19-24 old demographic of all walks of life·
To my knowledge the only source where this information could be located are from your friends mouths, or the college biased websites.
IKEA would be prominent, online textbook retailers, trade schools and other university's, alcohol companies, and backpack companies (ie North Face, Jansport, Dakine)
Articles I would run, Doorms vs Off Campus, secrets of a third year transfer, Schools that excel in certain majors, Transferring out of state, and the Costs of directly out of HS and CC.·

The book that I think I took the most from was The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald. This was one of the first real novels I actually enjoyed in High school. The drama, the characters, and the emotion were just too good. I felt for Gatsby and his yearning for daisy.
Huston Smith's Illustrated World's Religions is a very important book to me. This book opened my eyes to spirituality and enlightened me on the different aspects of religion. I was given this by my father and it was important to me because it helped me understand all the different views and aspects of peoples faith.
My Most Influential Books

The very first story I clearly remember, has to be hands down one of the most influential books in my existence. Where's Spot? by Eric Hill was the reason I know how to read. I went to the Fremont Main Library and looked for this book religiously. It was so simple yet so fun cause it was a pop-up book.

MEDIA RESEARCH PROJECT: Does our self-image obsessed society, take in a skewed view of whats normal? Do we have different views from people of different culture?
After reading countless magazines, the pictures of "normal" people in ads is an illusion. I want to do a research project to illustrate what us as a nation believe what is normal. I would do content analysis with various demographics in order to see trends in judgement. A random survey of people who enter a mall, would suffice. I would ask them to choose through a series of Picture A to Picture B questions, and at the end of the survey derive an answer based on there response. If I wanted to take it a step further I could go to another country and do the same thing. In our country a mirage of whats normal is placed, and I believe that it has become so embedded in our minds that the results would reflect that.

MY MEDIA AUTOBIOGRAPHY
SAMIRtheSAV
Sunday, September 26, 2010
I am blessed to say that in my existence I've witnessed technology evolve from simple to complex. In my short time of being on this world I've become exposed to the wide array of mass media.
Revolving in and out of my life are:
Books are quite simply the most under appreciated form of mass media in our lives. As a child I taught myself to read and write through the use of books, we currently (as good students) are obliged to spend ridiculous amounts of money to buy textbooks to enhance our education. With the advancement in technology, books are becoming obsolete, and to me at least hopefully are the fees involved with purchasing them.
Newspapers to me were solely for comics and the games. After being involved with my schools journalism class, I've come to realize that they are for so much more. As we come to 2011 the importance of newspaper is declining due to the fact we have so much more efficient and speedy forms of receiving news. To me the newspaper is another form of media that will become obsolete withing the decade.
Magazines can follow suit with the effects that are destroying newspapers, in today's society. I myself have always valued the information and knowledge from magazines, but in this day and age our glossy covered toilet entertainment is being archived online. From my video game magazines and my pre-pubescent curiosity of the female anatomy, magazines were quite impactful on my life as a child and my life currently.
Movies and Television outside of the Internet, which i will get to shortly, have by far impacted my life the most. having older siblings and looking a tad more mature than my age would tell, allowed me to experience movies and television in mass quantities at a young age. From my first memory of watching Aladdin in the theaters to seeing the rise and death of hit shows such as Seinfeld, Friends, Arrested Development and so forth I've always paid close attention to this certain form of media. My life currently is aligned to hopefully become a television personality. I gained the knowledge, heard the messages, adopted persona's that I saw in these two types of media.
Recordings and Radio, to me are two forms of media that are intertwined in my life. I've always listened to the radio to listen to music only. Me listening to the Radio helped me decide what type of music recording I would go after. The number of recordings I've physically purchased could be counted with one hand. I don't blame myself for not supporting the Recording industry, I blame the economy ( which I blame everything for).
Last but not least, is the Internet, Al Gore's finest creation. From the screechy dial-up connection to me friending thousands of people from around the world, the Internet has been far and beyond one of the most important mass mediums out there. I am currently generating a homework assignment on the Internet. To me to explain how the Internet has consentingly stalked my life would be for me to write a novel.
